How this airport has changed over the past 10 years. It wasn't so long ago they had to chase cattle off the runway so charter flights could land. On January 12, 2012 a new, modern airport terminal was added. In 2018 the airport's name was officially changed to the "Guanacaste International Airport", although its formal name is still "Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport". Four new gates allow passengers to arrive and depart in much greater comfort. There are plans to continue expanding the airport over the next 5-10 years as tourism continues to grow in the region.
A number of domestic and major international carriers offer direct flights to Guanacaste International Airport from the US, Canada, UK, EU, Caribbean, Central and South America.
